"I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein", Clinton said in the statement. "The behavior described by the women coming forward can not be tolerated".

Weinstein contributed $46,350 to Clinton during her presidential candidacy, as well as to HILLPAC, a committee Clinton used to support other Democrats while she was a senator, according to The Associated Press.

More allegations against Weinstein emerged on Tuesday, as The New Yorker reported that three women claimed he had raped them, and the Times reported a new slew of allegations from high-profile figures including Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. Weinstein was one of many from Hollywood who donated to Bill Clinton's legal defense fund in the 1990s, a Washington Post report from the time stated.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who has been outspoken on the issue of sexual assault, also has not appeared to make any public statements about Weinstein since the report came out, and the Biden Foundation did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Clinton spoke in California Monday night as part of her book tour and did not address the allegations, nor was she asked about them during the 90-minute event.

In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Clinton's running mate, Sen. Three days after the report, Weinstein was sacked by the company he co-founded. Clinton also headlined a number of big-dollar fundraisers at Weinstein's home in New York City.

Despite Dunham being a strong supporter of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and denouncing Weinstein's actions, Clinton herself has yet to speak out about the actions of Harvey Weinstein.

Weinstein visited the White House during the Obama presidency and helped put on a film workshop in 2013, where then-first lady Michelle Obama described him as a "wonderful human being, a good friend and just a powerhouse".

A high-profile donor in the Democratic Party, Weinstein has contributed more $20,000 to Clinton's campaigns since she ran for U.S. Senate in NY in 1999, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Aides to Obama had no response on Tuesday.
